MARCH MADNESS is BACK at SHF! Join in the fun of the NCAA tournament by playing SHFAA�s NCAA Square game. Proceeds (after winnings) will benefit the kids playing sports for Seven Holy Founders. The Game is Simple: Pick a square of your choice and email it in to sadeth@touchpoint-marketing.net. Hit reply all on this email and it will go to Sadeth. It is $20 per square. The WINNING team�s final score will come from the side of the spread. The LOSING team�s number will come from the top of the spread. If there is a final score where the last number in the score matches your square�s numbers, you win: First round $10 Second round $15 Third round $20 Fourth round $25 Final four $40 Championship $100 The numbers for the spread will be drawn on Thursday morning. SHF Night at the Ballgame

Tuesday, April 27th vs. the Atlanta Braves is SHF Night at the Cardinals game. The Cardinals have very few home games in April & SHF families will be there in force. We have been told our tickets will be in the 4th level home plate area this year. Our adults, kids & teams will be in the pre-game parade on the field as well. All SHF baseball & softball teams will NOT have games that night so we can all go to the game. Tickets are only $13. Get your group set up if you wish to sit together. Please make checks payable to SHFAA & deliver in an envelope to the SCHOOL OFFICE with any seating preference you may have as soon as possible. Blues Hockey Tickets

Area Road Construction

Union Road bridge over I-55 update: Union Road will close on March 15 in preparation for the bridge demolition. Union Rd. will be closed between Spring Rd and the northbound I-55 on-ramp during construction. I-55 will be closed in both directions between Reavis Barracks & Bayless for the Union Rd. bridge demolition on March 26 at 10 pm. and will reopen on Monday, March 29 at 5 am

Catholic Family Tuition Assistance

Any Catholic family wishing to apply for tuition assistance through Seven Holy Founders Parish or through the Archdiocese for the 2010-2011 school year must obtain a FACTS Application from either the School Office or the Priory Office. Students must attend a Parochial Elementary School or an Archdiocesan, Regional or Parochial High School to be eligible. The due date for the application is April 1, 2010 and MUST include a copy of your 2009 Income Tax Return. Families must be registered parishioners of SHF to qualify for a Parish Grant. On behalf of the Seven Holy Founders Athletic Association, we would like to thank everyone for your support of the Super Raffle. If you haven�t heard, 348 of the 350 tickets were purchased by supportive members of the parish, friends and relatives of the parish. It is one of the most successful Super Raffles in recent history! The party in the hall was attended by a great cross-section of people in the parish, and we all had a great time! Thanks to all who worked diligently on this effort; the list is too long to name names. It was a great total effort by a bunch of people. Thank you again!

Children�s Health Fair

Help Women and Babies in Need

The 7th grade Girl Scout Troop #951 is collecting items for the Birthright Organization. The troop is collecting baby items such as diapers, diaper wipes, onesies, small baby clothes (size 3-6 months) bibs, baby bottles, baby blankets or anything you might wish to donate. Sweatshirts

Just a reminder as the cold weather continues�.the handbook clearly states��Famously Yours supplies our school with navy appliqu�d SHF sweatshirts in several styles. Famously Yours will initial these sweatshirts to help in identifying ownership. In addition, plain navy crew neck sweatshirts (purchased anywhere) may be worn. All sweatshirts must be solid navy in color. Shirts are worn under sweatshirts when in uniform.� The only exception to this rule is the 8th grade class sweatshirt and the High School sweatshirts when acceptances are received.

Rainbows

Rainbows, a program which guides kids through life�s storms has been offered here at SHF school previously. Rainbows is the largest international, non-profit charity dedicated solely to helping the world�s children successfully navigate the very difficult grief process associated with death, divorce, deployment of a family member, incarceration of a loved one, or any of a multitude of significant event traumas. And, while a few children are resilient, we know that most do not bounce back without help. We are thinking about offering the program again. If you think that your child(ren) would benefit from this program, please call the school office and let us know.

Box Tops for Education

You wouldn�t think that clipping and sending in all of those box tops would add up to much, but they really do. We recently received a check for $780.00 which was used to help our computer program. Special thanks to Mrs. Donna Miles who cleans up, counts and sends all those box tops to General Mills.

First Reconciliation

The 2nd graders from Seven Holy Founders School and the Parish PSR gathered on Monday evening, January 25 to celebrate their First Reconciliation. It was wonderful to see their relieved and happy faces when they were finished. Thanks to Mrs. Effinger and Mrs. Tetreault who worked hard to prepare them and to Bro Arnaldo for making sure that everything went smoothly as planned. Fish Fry

Our First Fish Fry is February 19th. The sign up sheets will be coming home in the next couple weeks. Media Person Needed: We are in need of a person that will notify all media sources of our fish fry dates, times, and prices. This does not require much work. Once a week the information, that will be provided to you, is faxed or e-mailed to the local papers. We did not have a media person last year and definitely need one this year. Person to Receive Food Deliveries Needed: We are also in need of one person that can accept our food delivery each week. This is usually Wednesday between 11 & 2. The driver notifies you about 30 minutes in advance before arriving. This person double checks the inventory as it is delivered and tells the driver where to put all the items. A Super Illustration...Why Our Kids Need Your Support!!! This weekend members of the Athletic Association will once again be selling Super Raffle tickets after Mass. You have a 1 in 350 chance to win $10,000, and you gain admittance to our Super Bowl Party (2/7/10) that provides food & drink for the afternoon & evening. The tickets are $100 each. You can have multiple names on 1 ticket, so please consider getting a group together to by 1 ticket. We thought it would make sense to let you know why the Athletic Association runs fundraisers like our current Super Raffle. Here is an illustration of the typical costs associated with our basketball program:

Average team has 8 players.
Each player pays $60 to play raising $480.
Average league fee to CYC is $325.
We have 24 teams, so we need extra gym time for practice at Affton HS & Affton White Rogers.
Average cost of gym time is $250 per team.
Tournaments: Each team plays a minimum of 3 @ $100 per tournament.
Uniforms: Current uniforms are in poor shape, and we need to invest in new ones. Average price will be $40 per uniform ($320 per team). So, while we collect $480 per team for fees, our expenses are more than $1,195 per team.

Fundraisers like our Super Raffle help make up the deficit. Please consider buying a ticket after Mass or by calling Mike Klenc @631-1394 or Tom Schiller @631-8483. Thanks for your continued support of our kids!!!

The parish history of Seven Holy Founders includes an extensive chapter on the educational ministry that has been a part of the overall ministry in which the parish engages. Thousands of Catholics have been educated in our Catholic Faith through the parish school, the PSR program and the many Adult Educational opportunities offered by the parish throughout the years. In the pursuit of assisting each of us to grow more deeply in our faith, the total educational ministry of the parish has been a blessing to many. Obviously, with the economy, shifts in Catholic practice and the rising costs of healthcare, etc., the parish educational ministries have become more expensive to operate over the last 15 years. Yet, to not have some form of an educational ministry would be a detriment to the mission of our parish. In recent weeks I have been praying and reflecting on how best to keep our educational ministries operating well and continue to offer ways to educate ourselves and our young ones in our precious Catholic faith. As part of this prayer and reflection I have also been considering the best way to use monies raised from the upcoming Auction (March 13, 2010) for the greater good of the parish. I have decided to use the money to establish a PARISH EDUCATION FUND. The fund would be used in four ways: 15% to fund Adult Education Programs 15% to fund our PSR program 15% to create a fund to assist families with the payment of tuition. 55% for a fund to assist the parish in paying school expenses not covered by tuition and fees. This fund will also help keep tuition affordable for most families. The fund would grow through two means: -monies donated directly to the fund from grants, wills, estates, and donations -through the use of the EDUCATION FUND envelope that will become part of the monthly offering envelopes that parishioners receive. School families, PSR families and parish organizations will be strongly encouraged to contribute to this fund, at the least, on an annual basis. The establishment of this fund will benefit all of the educational ministries of our parish which are equally important to our parish mission of teaching Christ to all. Champions After School Program

New Grading System

We have just finished the First Quarter of the school year. Time flies when you are having fun!! Report cards are going home on the 6th of November. This will be the first time that we are going to use the computer program �Making the Grade� for our report cards, so you will notice a change in the look of the report cards. In this process, we have also standardized the grading scale for Grade 1-8. We will be using letter grades (A, B, C, D, F) for our grading scale. Please be patient with us as we make the transition.

For a limited time, we have a new addition to the SHF School Family� Many thanks to Mr. Tony Simon of Ballwin, MO, the brother-in-law of Mrs. Margie Simon, our Kindergarten Aide for the wonderful donation of the 506 lb pumpkin that is now at home on the lawn between the School and the Church. Fairy Tale Tea

Once upon a time�Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, to be exact The Magic House will host its annual Fairy Tale Tea at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm each day. Aspiring princes and princesses will have the opportunity to sip tea or apple juice, dine on fine pastries provided by St. Louis Bread Co., make a bejeweled crown to take home and enjoy a short, live production of Cinderella inside the Whitaker Theater at The Magic House. Following the play, kids can see their favorite characters up close as Cinderella, Prince Charming, and the Fairy Godmother visit with guests and sign autographs. Fairy Tale Tea tickets are $15 for Magic House members and $18 for non-members. Admission to the museum is included in the ticket price. Guests must be at least 3 years old to attend. Poker Run

It is time to make your reservations for the Parish Poker Run. The party will take place on October 17 and will begin in the main hall at 6:30. Each person will be given three homes to visit. Each home will provide food, drinks and two playing cards. With these cards you will then try to make the best poker hand. The evening ends back in the main hall where we will crown a winner and have a mini auction. Come by yourself or get a group together. Reservations are required. The cost is $15.00 a person. 3rd Grade Dictionary Program

Several weeks ago our Third Graders each received a brand new dictionary. These dictionaries were provided by the South Side Optimists Club. The Optimist�s have been donating dictionaries for the past four years and this program will have surpassed over 3,500 dictionaries donated. Our sincerest thanks to the Optimist�s for thinking about our Third Graders!!!

Trunk or Treat

Truck or Treat will take place in Sunday, October 25 at 7:00 pm. People may enter the parking lot at anytime to get a space. At 7:00 pm a whistle will sound and all the parking lots will be closed to cars. Once the lots are closed, the children are free to begin trick or treating. The children walk from car to car until they have covered the lots. We don�t put an age limit on the participants, all we ask is that the children who participate be in costume and accompanied by either their parent or another adult. When all the fun is over, the lots will be opened and the cars may leave. The whole event is usually over in about an hour. We also tell the parents that if they would like to decorate their cars, it adds to the fun of the night. Last year it was very well attended. Bring enough candy!!! I would guess between 75 to 95 families were there and some had multiple children. If people want to park by friends or neighbors, you should arrive early. Pray for nice weather and dress warmly. SLAM Volleyball tournament

John�s presentation, �Ignite your Faith! Discovering the goodness in your personal struggle,� will reveal God�s presence, grace and magnanimity during times of our greatest challenge and sorrow. John�s life is proof of the power of the human spirit. As a nine-year-old boy, he was burned on 100% of his body and given less than 1% chance of surviving the first night. He endured months in the hospital, years in therapy, dozens of surgeries, and lost of all of his fingers to amputation. John will be sharing his message with our children at school on October 6th at 1:30 pm in the Parish Hall. We look forward to seeing you on Monday, October 12th.

SAINTS & SINNERS There�s a new nun in town and Vicki Quade, creator of the hit show Late Nite Catechism, introduces us to Mother Superior in her new show, Saints & Sinners. Mother Superior�s ruler is quick, her aim is spot-on, and she wants to know who in the audience is a saint and who are the sinners! Quade calls the show �a funny look at fundraising. Mother Superior is called by the archdiocese to St. Bruno�s to help in their fundraising. The economy is tough, donations are down, and someone has to save the Parish! Poker Run Host Homes

If you have been looking for a way to get involved with the SHF Auction 2010, here�s your chance. We are in need of host homes for the upcoming Poker Run, which officially kicks off the activities for SHF Auction 2010. The Poker Run will take place on Saturday, October 17th and we are looking for families to host three separate groups (max 20 per group) for short mini parties of approximately 45 minutes each. Hosts supply beverages and appetizers for each of the three groups that will rotate to your home. You will distribute 2 poker cards to each person visiting your home, which will be combined with the other cards received over the course of the night and re-convene at the Parish Hall at the end of the evening. We compare cards to determine the best poker hand. The best men�s and women�s hand will be awarded the prize of King and Queen of the Auction. You may wish to co-host with others to share the cost of the evening. All host participants receive a poker hand of their own when they return to the Hall for prizes and a Mini-Auction. SANCHEZ, OSM has been assigned to the local Servite Community in the Priory and to minister in the parish. Bro. Arnaldo comes with varied experience in pastoral - parochial ministry and he is excited to be assigned to minister within our parish. At present he and I are discerning that details of his ministry. Brother will arrive in Affton on July 31. The announcement of Brothers assignment will appear in my bulletin column this Sunday. Please join me in welcoming Brother Arnaldo and praying for his ministry among us. I pray that each of you are enjoying the beauty of the summer. I am remembering each of you in my daily prayers. Volleyball scorekeepers and referees' data sheets need to be turned in by June 22. You can deliver to the volleyball box at Sanford's house or mail it to Sanford or send it to South County CYC at http://www.cycstlscnty.net To be a volleyball scorekeeper you must be 12 by September 1st. And attend a scorekeeping clinic. To be a referee you must be 13 by September 1st, score at least 80% on the open book test. and attend a referee clinic. Both scorekeepers and referees must complete the Official data sheet. Referees must also complete the test. All are due by June 22nd.

PICNIC DAY IS SATURDAY, MAY 16th !
WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

It�s time to set up for the picnic again this year. This is one of our parish�s biggest events and a great day for the kids�young and old! The picnic is impossible without lots of help! We really depend on the school parents for setup of the game booths, signs and equipment, as well as cleanup of the parish grounds on Sunday.

Setup will start on Monday, May 11th, at 5:00 p.m. and continue Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday till about 9:00 p.m. each evening. On Friday, we will start working at 10 a.m., so if you are available to come up during the day, we can really use the extra help.

Why do we need you?

It is important that we have enough people on hand to help assemble the game booths. Many hands will make this task go more quickly. Just bring a pair of gloves and wear clothes you don�t mind getting a little dirty.
We especially need a strong setup crew on Monday night. Our fine electricians, who are donating their time to the picnic, want to finish early in the week, so they are not still stringing up lights late on Friday night.
Anyone with a pickup would be appreciated because some of the equipment is bulky and needs to be moved from the church basement to the game booths.
In addition to booth assembly, there are many other tasks that anyone can do, especially on Thursday and Friday, such as setting up tables and chairs, hanging game signs, preparing condiments for the hamburger stand, making coffee and iced tea for inside dinners, boxing cakes, covering the tables, etc.

Cleanup of the picnic grounds will start at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 17th. Many helpers are needed to dismantle the booths and clean up the school grounds. Please set aside some time to help on cleanup day, which will make everyone�s load a little lighter. Join us for 7:00 a.m. Mass and stay to help. (God won�t mind if you are dressed down.) Last year, we were finished by 1:00 p.m. because of your help! We would like to do the same this year.

We realize and are appreciative that many parents have already volunteered to work in game and food booths on Picnic Day. Setup and cleanup work is another area where it is essential that everyone gets involved and helps, rather than it falling on the shoulders of a dedicated few.

Keep in mind:

Food and drinks are provided for the volunteers who set up or clean up.
We will make sure you feel welcome and make sure you are put to work. We can never have too much help!
Kids needing service hours are welcome.
Picnic setup and cleanup is a great way to meet and get to know other parents!

Duke University Talent Search

Several weeks ago eleven of our Seven Holy Founders School 7th graders took the ACT test along with juniors and seniors in high school. For a 7th grader to be eligible to take the test, they had to score on the 95%-ile or above on one of the major categories on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Twelve of our 7th graders were invited to take the test. We congratulate all the students who took the test. Special recognition goes to the following students who scored a 20 or higher on the English or math test, or a 21 or higher on the reading or science test: Garrett Gassner, Maria Gorla, Libby Graef, Pete Nahn, Jennifer Ott, and Steven Placht. They receive state recognition and are asked to attend a ceremony at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri.

The Student Council is very grateful to all who graciously donated prizes and candy for the Mission Carnival. It helped to make the carnival a huge success! The Student Council raised over $2,000.00. Proceeds will be divided between the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the H2O Project. Thanks again for all your support! During Lent, we are asking our students to focus on the three traditional Lenten practices which we Christians observe: Prayer, Fasting/Sacrifice, and Almsgiving. One form of prayer the students will experience is the Stations of the Cross. They will all have two opportunities to attend Stations in church as a school community. In addition, the wall outside the gym will be transformed into our own Way of the Cross during the Lenten season. The trophy case in the foyer is also being transformed into a visual reminder that we are all following Jesus...With my Lord to Calvary. Students have all received their Rice Bowls, which they may use to collect any spare change they may have, especially from not buying a treat for themselves.

March Madness

March Madness starts this Thursday...don't forget to get your square! The SHFAA has put together an entertaining way to enjoy the NCAA tournament even more. We are running a board much like the ones that you have seen at Super Bowl parties. The difference is that the numbers that you receive from a square will represent the last digit in the final score of each basketball game thru the entire tournament. One will be the digit of the winning team and the other of the losing team. The left side of the board will be the winning side and the top of the board going across will be the losing teams score. So if you buy a square ($20) and receive 3,8 and the final score of a game is 73-68 you win the amount of $ dictated for that round. Br. Joel would like to thank all the faculty, staff, students, and choir for a very beautiful Mass last Sunday for the kick-off of Catholic Schools week. We had a very exciting week (even with time off for the weather!!). One of the highlights was having the 5th and 6th graders participate in the National Assoc. of Women in Construction Block Kids Building Program. We were the only school selected from the Greater St. Louis area to participate in this program. The students were given 45 minutes in which to build an item out of 100 interconnecting blocks. The winner of the program will have his/her project go to Kansas City for Regional Competition. The winners were: First Place: Macy Gassner (6th - Mr. Morice) - Soccer Stadium Second Place: Patrick Conroy (6th - Mr. Morice) - Replica of the Empire State Bldg. Third Place: Eve Bauer (6th - Mr. Morice) - Flower Tower We have had several other competitions in the last few weeks. The winner of the Geography Bee, which took place on Monday, January 5th, was Ben Walsh (7th - Mrs. Wagner). The Spelling Bee which took place on Monday, January 12th, was won by Michael Braun (8th - Mrs. Dacus). Well done, good and faithful ones. You have represented SHF School proudly.

Plastic Bag Collection

The Fr. Tolton Center, a part of Catholic Charities Community Services, delivers 500 meals a week to homebound seniors in north St. Louis. They desperately need plastic bags that you carry your groceries home in from your local grocery store (to keep cold food cold and hot food hot) as they make their deliveries. So put those plastic grocery bags you have at home to good use. Bring them to school and deposit them in the containers provided by the school office. Help Catholic Charities deliver meals to the homebound! For more information, contact Joel Wilper in Mrs. Schaetzel�s room. This is Joel�s service project for SHF�s Boy Scout Troop 165. Don�t forget Santa�s Gift Shop will be here on Wednesday, December 17 in the Parish Hall from 8:00 AM - 2:30 PM. Students from Preschool through 8th grade will have an opportunity to do some holiday shopping. All items will be priced $5.00 and under. Please send a small amount of money to school with your child if they wish to shop. We are set to have a visit from a special someone, too!!!

1st Annual Speed Stack Tournament

1st Annual Speed Stack Tournament will be held on Monday, January 19 in the SHF School Gymnasium from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. When the forecast calls for a wintery mix...HATS, GLOVES, AND SCARVES ARE THE FIX!!! The SHF Youth Ministry is collecting hats, gloves, and scarves through the weekend of December 13 and 14, 2008.� Drop off your donations in the marked box outside the school office.� Donations will benefit the children in after school programs in the St. Louis area through the St. Vincent DePaul Society.� Help keep the children warm this winter!!�Mrs. Maryann Creamer and the SHF Youth Group thank you for your support.
